Michael Fassbender and the “X-Men” cast at Comic Con 2013 + Photos

Untitled 16

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy play the youthful versions of famed frenemies Magneto and Professor X in the current X-Men universe. In real life, however, these two seem like the bestest of best friends since Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. (Like the “Star Trek” stars, the McFassy bromance has an appropriate Tumblr presence as well.) If you don’t like having comic book movie plots spoiled years in advance, this year’s Comic-Con probably wasn’t for you. If, however, you enjoy seeing Ian McKellen try to literally charm the pants off of his X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star Michael Fassbender, then this year’s Comic-Con was probably the best thing to happen ever.

McKellen and Fassbender, who will play old and young Magneto, respectively, were sitting near each other at their Comic-Con panel. Questions were asked, answered, and generally bantered over until McKellen decided that Fassbender was just too handsome not to flirt with. So, without further ado, this is what Ian McKellen’s game sounds like: “I just want to say it’s great to be back in California,” McKellen told the crowd. “I feel safe here now that you’ve gotten rid of Proposition 8. I’m looking for a husband…It’s great to meet you, Michael.” [source]

The plot chronicles X-Men as they travel through time and interact with past versions of themselves, pairing Ian McKellen and Halle Berry, stars of the earlier “X-Men” trilogy, with Fassbender and Lawrence, who anchored “X-Men: First Class. Bryan Singer, who directed “X-Men” and “X2,” wrote and directed “Days of Future Past.”

“The goal was to make a film that would bring the casts together,” Singer said at a press conference before the panel at Comic-Con. “Time travel or displacement would be tool we could use to do that.”

Singer came on stage first and showed a sliver of footage from the movie, which will open in theaters next summer. The one man who could play himself in both movies was Hugh Jackman because his character, Wolverine, is ageless. Jackman was on stage just moments earlier talking about “Wolverine,” the upcoming film focused on the clawed mutant.

Jackman has now played “Wolverine” in six movies — “Days of Future Past” will be number seven — prompting “Wolverine” director James Mangold to compare the harmony of actor and character to Sean Connery as James Bond and Clint Eastwood as the man with no name. Jackman tirelessly lauded the fans at Comic-Con, thanking them for their support and for elevating his career to new heights. Playing Wolverine in the first “X-Men” was his first role in an American movie, and the always gracious actor argued it was one of the greatest roles in all of cinema.

His own cast members contested that moments later when a fan asked them who their favorite “X-Men” character was. While Wolverine received three votes, Mystique (Lawrence) came out on top with four. And a fraction of another. Patrick Stewart said he would play “any female character in any ‘X-Men’ movie because then I might stand the chance of winning an Academy Award.” Berry and Lawrence both took home statuettes after their initial turns in “X-Men” — though for other roles.

Many of the cast members commented on how it was working with people from the other movies, using that as an opportunity to tell some jokes.

“The best part about this movie has been knowing that at an earlier time in my life I was James McAvoy,” Patrick Stewart quipped, to which McAvoy said he would be more than happy to grow up and be Sir Patrick Stewart.

Several of the actors on stage have been on other panels at the annual convention, including Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) and Anna Paquin (“True Blood”).
So what’s it like directing that many different stars at once?

“I like ensemble films,” Singer said. “I started with ‘The Usual Suspects.’ There’s a lot of interesting people to cut to. The more the merrier.” [source]

PLOT: The X-Men send Wolverine to the past to change a major historical event that could globally impact man and mutant kind.

Twelve Years a Slave (2013) Exclusive News & Photos

Untitled 5

Twelve Years a Slave, slated for a fall release, is director Steve McQueen’s adaptation of the 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northup, an African-American who was born a free man but was tricked, captured and sold into slavery. He wound up working for 12 years on Louisiana plantations. The British filmmaker is well-versed in American history, but he found Northup’s story to be completely obscure.

“It was the Anne Frank story of America of that time,” says McQueen. “It’s the situation and the detail of Solomon’s recollection of those events that ingrained itself in my brain, and the humanity of everyone involved.”

One of the things that stood out when McQueen read the book was how much of a gentleman Northup was, even under extreme circumstances. That’s why he tapped English actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (Kinky Boots, American Gangster) to bring the figure to life. “He’s like a Sidney Poitier or even Harry Belafonte,” McQueen says. “There’s a certain kind of class and dignity about him. He brings that with him wherever he goes.”

The movie is a historical tale but also very much a straightforward and humbling journey for the audience, Ejiofor says. “He goes through an extraordinary ordeal, a very painful, brutal experience, and found a kind of redemption on the other side of it.” Northup actually struck up an “extraordinary friendship” with his first owner, Baptist preacher William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), says Ejiofor. But most of his 12 years was spent under the watch of the cruel planter Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), who posed an incredible physical and mental challenge to Solomon.

“Edwin Epps was able to create a very oppressive circumstance with great ease, almost flippantly” says Ejiofor. “It’s a very dramatic relationship and interesting dynamic they have as Solomon is attempting to survive it. Epps is not some Machiavellian character — he just has a mindset and a personality that allowed him to behave in a certain way to the people he owns.”

McQueen, who cast Fassbender in his dramas Hunger (2008) and Shame (2011), says the actor has an intensity to his performance “that no one’s ever seen before, and that’s saying something.” Recent best-actress Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Solomon’s young daughter, and the cast also includes her Beasts of the Southern Wildco-star Dwight Henry,The Wire’s Michael K. Williams, Paul Giamatti and Alfre Woodard. The film also features newcomer Lupita Nyong’o — “a star is born,” McQueen says of his discovery. A recent Yale drama grad, Nyong’o plays Patsey, a slave whom Solomon befriends on the plantation and who has a volatile relationship with Epps, much to dismay of Epps’ wife (Sarah Paulson).

Brad Pitt has a small role as a Canadian carpenter who is integral to Solomon’s eventual freedom, but he played a much larger part as a producer and A-list force behind the scenes. “Without Brad, this film wouldn’t have been made. Fact,” McQueen says. “Just his presence sometimes could lift everyone’s mood. It’s like having a great ballplayer on a team. He doesn’t have to play a big role, but his presence can lift everyone’s game.”

McQueen and Ejiofor appreciate that Twelve Years a Slave will be many moviegoers’ introduction to an important figure along the lines of a Harriet Tubman or Frederick Douglass. “His story is not something that’s been mythologized or idealized. It’s raw and it’s right there and it’s a real connection,” Ejiofor says. “You can look at this film and be of any ethnic grouping and identify with Solomon,” McQueen adds. “He has been taken away into circumstances that are horrific and not pleasant. All he wants is to get back to his family.” [source]

Steve McQueen’s eagerly anticipated 12 Years a Slave gets an October 18th release date, putting it smack in the middle of the best time to release movies into the Oscar race. The pic marks McQueen and Fassbender’s third collaboration, the first two being The Hunger and Shame. [source]

Last week, Fox Searchlight has released a set of official photos from the upcoming film, giving us our very first look at it. And with this reveal, I’ll say that the first trailer is a few days away, as is often the case when marketing engines begin (usually with some still photos to tease, followed by a poster, and then, finally, a first trailer). Angel (2007) Gallery Updates

Untitled 8

Angel, also known as the Real Life of Angel Deverell, is a 2007 British film based on novel of the same name by Elizabeth Taylor, about the life of a fiery and passionate young writer. The protagonist was portrayed by Romola Garai, director François Ozon’s first and only choice for the role. Other characters were played by Michael Fassbender, Sam Neill and Charlotte Rampling, amongst others.

PLOT: The rise and fall of a young eccentric British writer, in the early 20th century.

Angel received mixed reviews, with a 50% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Matthew Turner of View London called it an “Enjoyable, impressively directed melodrama that stays just the right side of kitsch and features a superb performance by Romola Garai.” Whilst also stating that “The film’s biggest problem is that Angel is such a thoroughly obnoxious character that it’s impossible to engage with her on an emotional level”, he ended saying that “Ozon’s films are always worth watching and Angel is no exception, thanks to great direction and a committed performance from Garai.” I’ve made over 300 stills from the film, also uploaded posters, on set and promo photos. Check them out in the gallery or in the links below!
